This project converts a bungalow into a ''shared house''. The client's request was to
create two spaces, one designated for herself and her husband (1/2 ground floor + loft)
and one designed for her parents (1/2 ground floor). The client also wanted to convert the
garage into a room and use it as part of the design. Functionality was the main issue that
was taken into consideration when shaping the design, since the client had specific
requirements such as the number of bedrooms and bathrooms. Effective designs shift the thinking from
technology or objects to people. It’s based on what humans need in order to improve their situation— to make things better and easier.
Therefore, the design process started with creating a boundary which separates the two flats on the ground floor.
The first flat spreads to the loft and provides one en-suite, two double bedrooms,a family bathroom and a study room, all
located in the loft. On the ground floor, the flat is entered through an atrium, where the staircase to the loft is located. The existing
conservatory was connected to the adjacent room and converted into a spacious kitchen and dining room. The back garden can be
accessed through a double door, from the dining room.
There is also an interconnecting door that provides the link between flats. The entrance door is aligned with the kitchen and the double door from the dining in order to balance the light and also give the impression of a bigger, airy space. A spacious living room was added to the
front of the building, accessed from the entrance hallway. Also, a toilet and an airing cupboard are provided on the ground floor.
Unlike the first flat, where the entrance is on the front elevation, the entrance of the second flat is on the side elevation, through an
existing door. Despite the fact that the second flat, designated to an elderly couple, is significantly smaller than the first one, the
proposed design gives the sense of a more spacious space. Two existing toilets were demolished and connected with the existing
entrance hallway, in order to create a double bedroom. The second double bedroom is connected to the first one as well as a
bathroom. The flat enters directly into the kitchen and dining area and accesses the back garden through a large living room.
